Briggs 5.5hp quantum engine model #129802. This has the primer bulb on the back of the air cleaner backing plate. I had the carb off to clean it and the gasket between the backing plate & the carb was torn. I put it back together without the gasket & I had to squirt some gas into the cyl. to get it to start.
It ran great but is really hard to start when cold. I don't understand how this type of primer bulb works. Could the missing gasket be the hard starting problem? I ordered the gasket but am curious if this could be the problem?

Yes, it needs the gasket to prime. Remember that you are securing a piece of plastic and don't over tighten the screws.

Thanks for the reply. I am not a mechanic although occasionally some one will bring something to me to tinker with. I had never seen this type of primer bulb set-up. I installed the gasket last night & it did help with the starting.
