Replace or repair Cub Cadet

I have owned a 1990 Cub (18hp) for a year. I have never been thrilled with it but I could afford it and it mows my yard and plowed in the winter. It can be quirky to start, even after it was tuned up, and usually needs a long "rest" to restart if you shut it off midway thru the lawn.
Anyway, mowing a few days ago, smoke (whitish) began to come out of the exhaust. Soon, it was billowing out the flywheel vent also. I stopped it, then restarted to get it back near the driveway. It awaits an estimate (7-10 days) at the shop.
Now I am pondering if I should spare the $60 eval charge and just buy something else...there are a couple used ones in my area that would suit me for around $600. Any input?? Thanks!
