craftsman 48' automatic loss of speed

I have recently noticed I am losing ground speed on my riding mower. I changed the drive belt. Didn't seem to help much. It's really slow in reverse. Barely moves. Could it be the spring on the idler puller for the drive belt?

Too vague description of your tractor for anyone to help you. Please specify which model of Craftsman product you have. The Sears/Craftsman Model number would help. Craftsman 48" automatic riding mower tells us that you have a riding mower.
