The Freedom deck is loved by all, except after they hit something. Seems you have found that with your research. They really are excellent performers and if in your normal mowing you keep the blades from striking something that could throw the deck out of time- you will do well. The quality of mulch with the 42c won't compare.

Thanks tomplum. The 2 used ones for sale on CL appear to look good from the pictures so I will take a closer look. The asking prices are $225 and $250, so I am thinking I can get them for $175 to $200 (will offer less to start).

That being said, any problem areas with these decks that I should pay particular attention to (other than the obvious)? The only thing I could think of is the condition of the deck sprockets.

Be sure to check items that are welded on like the lugs, etc. That said I love the Freedom42 for its cut. I also have a side discharge and there is no comparison. Those prices are in line as the dealer just charged me $250 to swap out my shell that a lug had broken loose on.

I have both decks on a JD 235 (2003). I only use the 42c for bagging leaves in the fall. As far a mulching, there is no comparison, the 42m gives a very nice (although not always perfect cut). In ten years, I've replace the timing belt once due to age. Just be sure there is no apparent damage or excessive vibration which can be the telltale of something potentially wrong. The deck has been durable and trouble free. Only belts and blade sharpening and lube.
