Just for starters, check these things:

1. Check for gasoline in tank
2. Check for gasoline getting through filter
3. Replace air filter
4. Clean & gap or replace spark plug

Does the engine fire at all, or just spin? Does it seem to spin at the usual speed? Has anybody been "adjusting" the carburetor?

For a scenario where it just suddenly stops as if someone turned off the switch, a seat switch or other interlock component might have failed.

Hello. Thanks all for your reply. He checked that it did have gas and we changed the fuel filter in it last week. It did drain through the new filter at that time, but we will check it again Friday.

We are going to get a new air filter and plug for it Friday also.

The engine does not fire, it only spins. and it does spin at it's usual speed. There has been no adjusting or tampering with the carburetor.

We were also thinking an interlock has failed, or wire insulation has gone bad. We will do our best to figure those out Friday, also.

ell you can check that easily enough by finding and disconnecting the "Kill Wire".
