Briggs problems

Just bought a Craftsman II with a 12hp Briggs in it. The problems I'm having with it are that it has an inconsistent idle at low rpm's(rpm drops then picks back up again). It isn't as noticeable at higher rpm but is still slightly present. Not sure if it's related but every once in a while on startup it backfires. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Well you need to post the engine model number to start with, 12 hp doesn't cut it.
