You are correct about the valve guide causing the bent push rod. The most common cause of this is a cooling problem, plugged cooling shroud and or cooling fins. Some say ethanol fuel causes the valves to stick resulting in the valve guide coming out. I have no opinion on this.

B&S says the only fix is a new head. I do have a fix at address below, put in proper format and remind me, model number and what you want. Simply pushing the guide back in place will not work.

I was able to find a used cylinder head with the valve guides in the correct place, matching the 1 I had. I put it on, adjusted the valves, and now it runs good.
What I noticed when taking off the old head was the cooling fins were blocked due to a mouse nest, causing the engine to overheat, and that's probably why the valve guide released from it's original position.
