Alternator/Voltage Regulator question

Hi Folks,

Briggs 44P700, 26 HP. The battery charging voltage and thereby everything else is intermittent. I replaced the battery as it was "07" as part of the troubleshooting/isolation process. No change.

It either works fine, or I'll be mowing and notice the ammeter is deflected in the discharge direction. That tells me that only the battery is keeping the blade solenoid energized and either the alternor or the voltage regulator have stopped working. Everything was disconnected and reconnected. I'm leaning to replacing the voltage regulator as it has solid state parts and would be more likely to become intermittent or fail than the alternator which is just copper.

Terminal voltage on the battery is about 12.3, when the tractor is running it's about 13.4-when things are working OK.

Opinions?

Thanks for your time,

Ev
