First off, the alternator has absolutely nothing to do with the ignition. I hope you tightened the flywheel to 150 ft. lbs after replacing the alternator. I would disconnect the kill wire at the base of the ignition coil and see what happens. Be aware that you will need to stop the engine by an alternate means. DO NOT run the engine without the cooling shroud. Walt Conner

tried pulling kill wire still nothing let it set over night started again but shut it off 10 minutes later back to same problem

If voltage made it's way to the new coil, it could have damaged it. A test for voltage at the kill wire is in order. If you know there is never voltage at the kill wire (check in every position of the ignition switch) and you are SURE there is no spark- it goes back to the coil. You basically need a grounded coil, no ground or power at the kill lead and magnets that do what magnets do to have spark.

Same engine (1997 vintage) had similar problem - if I turned engine off after running for >20 min., could not restart engine -no spark. Problem was the ignition coil! Apparently shorting out when the coil became hot.
