John Deere LT 150 Engine Problem

Folks, I picked up a nice used LT150 recently for a few bucks. Kohler 15 hp engine. Previous owner told me the engine was shot. He said he had started it not knowing the cooling fins were clogged from mice and it must have overheated. So now it starts - but only runs at full throttle - with lots of smoke. I beleive it's oil smoke. I've not taken a look into it yet but any ideas? Gas into the crankcase? Did it really overheat? Just curious what you think before I dig into it. Thanks.

get the detail specs off the engine ID plate - go to the kohler website - d/l a free serv and IPL manual - lotsa troubleshooting info in there.

The engine is the CV15S. I ran a compression test - 85 PSI. I think that's OK? I then pulled the carb and the throttle plate and screws were gone. I have to assume they were sucked into the engine, where else would they go? Does that mean the engine is trash? It did start, just WOT which I now beleive is because of the carb. Lot's of smoke and not sure what that was from. I think there may be gas in the oil. Any thoughts? Can you buy a replacement throttle plate and screws? Where? Thank you - Jim

The service parts are available to correct the leaking float valve and missing screws. Maybe a Deere or Kohler dealer? Oil/ filter needs a changin' too... Screws most times will belch themselves out through the exhaust- most times.

Update - I drained the engine oil and replaced oil and filter. There was approx 2.5 qts of oil in the engine. I then swapped a good Walbro LMK carb onto the engine and it started right up and ran fine. So where can I get the parts I need to fix the other LMK carb? I need the throttle plate and screws. These particular parts seem to be hard to find, any ideas where I can locate them? Thanks for your help.

might look for a L&G boneyard in yer area; mebbe ewbay or craigslist..
