Yes, if you are careful an impact with a good long extension works on most.The pulley mates with a star- much like a blade /hub configuration. There are some I've run into that don't have enough room to get an impact socket on the nut and through the body cavity. On these the transaxle gets lowered. Still some others require you remove the clip on the deck height lever and pull the shaft out of the way. All that being said, about 80% have the clearance so the impact will work, but if you would rather not- loosen the transaxle.

Tomplum...as it turned out, I didn't need to use an impact tool. I soaked the nut in WD40 overnight and half the next day, purchased a long extension for my ratchet...and you are so correct...barely room to get a socket under that bar and to put anything in it to turn it. But I was able to, and with one final effort, the nut came off. Easy sailing from then on. You sure know your stuff, and I really appreciate your replying to this. Thanks.
