That would likely be an unused (in your case) port to install a "Filter minder" indicator.
If there is enough thickness in the tube, you might be able to tap 1/8" NPT pipe threads into the tube and thread in a plastic (or metal) pipe plug. This is how I have repaired this kind of damage on plastic air filter housings on forklifts.

Taping will not harm anything in itself, but tape would not be considered a secure, permanent repair.
When the tape adhesive fails (it will given time and heat) the hole will once again allow dirt to enter.
I hope you noticed the defect soon after it broke.........otherwise, the engine may already be compromised from inhaling unfiltered air.

drove it about 5 minutes back to the house. Will try more permanent repair
