1963 John Deere 2010 PTO problem

Hello. My father has a 1962-63 John Deere 2010 tractor. Last fall he engaged the PTO and it made a grinding noise and then wouldn't engage. Now the lever just slides back and forth, and won't engage. We would like to know if anyone has any ideas of what went wrong, and the main info we need is how to remove the lever so we can dig in and try to fix it. He removed the cover to PTO but couldn't get the lever out. ANY help would be GREAT! Thanks!
