craftsman lt 2000 17.5 kohler wont start

For a few years now, I have had off and on starting problems with my lawn tractor. I had the carb cleaned last year, and this year got new battery, fuse etc. Each time I got it going, but now it won't start at all. I called someone in and they proceeded to tell me it was an electrical problem, "there was a short in one of the kill switches and that prevents it from starting" They put a bypass switch to shut the engine off when the key is turned to off, and an on/off valve on the gas line. I got it going twice after this, but ever since it wont start at all. I don't really want to buy another tractor, because this one cuts really well and is a great mower, but I don't know where to begin to fix it. It cranks but refuses to catch. New gas, filter, seafoam sprayed in carb, new spark plug (Tested okay by mechanic). Anyone got any ideas, or should I quit now and buy another?
