kohler command 23 rich on one cylinder

i have a turf ranger with a command sp 23 that is puting out black smoke under load at full throtle

i pulled the plugs and only one is black

i changed coils to opposit sides

comp.is 165 on both sides , put new carb

when it smokes it loses power and backfires out the carb

i just find it funny it is only rich in one cylinder

Is it a "two barrel" carburetor?? If so, that takes some of the mystery away. Post the engine numbers from the engine. Model number, code number.

this is a single barrel carb
the id sticker is gone off motor it says command sp 23 on the front and in the owners manual it tells me
model cu23s ser. 75581
hope this helps
by the way i replaced the carb and it made no diffrence

That's an interesting problem. You already tried a lot of stuff. Coils switched, new carb, compression check was equal.
It could be that you have a fuel pump with a vacuum tube running to the manifold of the rich cylinder and that vacuum powered fuel pump has a bad diaphragm that's sucking straight fuel. Also have you replaced the spark plugs? Let us know your outcome.
