tractor speed problem

I was using it and it was running normal. I was at the lowest gear which was fine. I decided to increase the speed and it did. I had to slow down again so I brought the gear down but the speed didn't change. I didn't hear any difference in the sound the engine was making. It was still fast. So I brought it up to the fastest again but the engine slowed down then it died. I lifted the hood and the smell of the gasoline was strong.

I started it, it was trying, it didn't turn on. I tried 3 times and it failed. I put it to choked and I was able to start it. At neutral position, I set the engine to slowest but engine was still very fast.

Something locked up. What is wrong with my tractor?

The gasoline contains sta-bil just in case you ask. It's new gasoline too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Maybe you could be more specific on what is doing what and also post the make /model of your tractor. We'd be glad to help.

RE: tractor speed problem

Let me guess. Yard Machines model # 13BN771G729 and the serial number is 1A176B70097.

You need to go ahead and post some pictures of you carburetor and the cables that control the engine speed.

Ok, I will do it once I get home tonight.

Yes, it's the Yard Machine that I posted about 2 weeks ago. I don't recall the serial number but the model number looks right.

Virtu, check the position of the cable indicated by the arrow in the photo below. Use the photo as a reference because this is a recent photo of your tractor, and the clamp tab that holds the cable tube in place might have loosened, allowing the cable tube to move backward, instead of pushing the white plastic slider forward.
If the cable slipped backward when you tried to move the throttle to a slower speed, the throttle slider would have remained where it was, and the engine RPM would not change from its high setting.

RE: tractor speed problem

tomplum,

I'll do my best to explain it.

When I first start my tractor, I put it to choke mode. Once it starts, I bring it down back to the lowest. I think this same stick is used for the speed of the rotation of the blade.

When in low, the engine sounds at a low pitch similar to a car when we are stepping on the gas pedal lightly. When I bring it up to the highest setting, I know that engine is in full speed. I can hear it. At this point, it's normal. This is what happens during my normal use.

Yesterday, it was normal for first 10 mins. I was at slow speed since I was just hauling away dirt. I increased the engine speed and the other stick so it will run/move faster since it was getting dark. I brought the speed down and placed in neutral since I need to unload the dirt. The engine was still running at the highest speed even after I already brought the gear down. I am very sure because of the rotation of the engine. I brought the stick up again to the highest setting and engine slowed down and started to die. It died. I tried restarting several times but no luck. It was only after I put it in Choke that it started. Oh before I put it to choke, I can smell gas really strong. No spill.

So I got it started but the engine speed didn't change. It was still rotating at a high speed. I decided to park since it was dark. I'll try it again tonight. :)

cable

Awesome! I'll check it tonight! :)

RE: tractor speed problem

I got it fixed. The problem is the other end. There is a metal that holds the cable shield. The cable actually came out of the metal. It's like a clamp but in order to hold the cable, you have to press the clamp with pliers so it grips the cable.

I also noticed that when I put the gear down to the lowest, the clamp loses its grip on the cable. The cable moves. I'm not referring to the core wire. I'm referring to the outer shield.

Looks like I need to buy a new cable. It's working now though. I just have to make sure that when I change gears, I have to do it slowly. The color white thing on the picture now moves back and forth. Thanks for all the help folks! :)
