| Can anybody point me to a place where I could find out about timing an old 7HP Kohler, K161, I believe.
The year is about 1959 and the coil is under the flywheel, but there are no magnets under the wheel. They are on the crank. It doesn't spark and the plug doesn't always fire consistently when testing it. |

| We tested the condensor and coil today. The condensor doesn't bounce on the meter when discharged, so that is suspect. The insulation on the coil is all cracked and falling off. My hunch is that the condensor is failing. |

| Sounds like a fun project. You could leave the condensor temporarily disconnected and retry it. Did you give the points a cleaning? |

| I got an answer just a few minutes ago from my buddy: Condenser seems to have done the trick although it wasn't the only problem. Still didn't start after condensor was installed. Started looking at the points again and they were not as good as I first thought. I dressed them up a little but still wouldn't start. Although there seemed to be good spark at the points, didn't seem to have good fire at the spark plug. Put a new plug in it and after I got all the raw fuel burned out of the cylinder it seems to run pretty good. It refired after it was hot and I started it one time since cold and it started pretty good. That was without the air cleaner on. I want to put that all back together and try it again. I am getting new points for it today from NAPA. So I guess it was a combination of things. |
