Craftsman mandrels 3 ear vs 4 ear

I was the lucky recipient of a nice 2003 era LT2000 with Kohler 17hp pro and 42" deck. Great shape, everything nice and tight. I chopped all the OPRs and switches out for reliability and convenience. The spindle brake was keeping the pivoting pulley from engaging the blades so I liberated the spindle brakes too.

However I noticed the cracked ear on one spindle housing and checking Amazon for a replacement and read in some reviews how this design breaks regularly. I noticed a 4 ear spindle for a new style deck. I have no experience with Craftsman parts so my question is about fitting a new 4 ear spindle into the old style deck. Would it be as simple as drilling 4 holes or are the height and mounting hole dimensions too different? After all, 4 ears are better than three.
