Troy Bilt Super Bronco steering problem

I have a Troy Bilt Super Bronco model 60TG. The steering has become totally disengaged all at once. The steering wheel turns but the wheels will not. The steering gear and the pinion gear just barely make contact. Neither appears damaged...they are just too far apart to engage properly. What could cause this sudden problem?

Sometimes the lower bushing on the steering shaft goes away on these. Best to replace both. Just need to get into it and look for wear.
