Briggs Stratton engine won't start after running hot

While looking for a oil leak ( oil breather) I removed the muffler and heat plate. When I reinstalled I pushed the muffler too far on the exhaust pipes. When I started the engine it ran fine for a while and then started missing real bad. I noticed that the exhaust pipe was getting really hot and i turned it off. Now the engine will not fire. The shaft that has the govenor attached will not full open up the throttle without forcing it. any suggestions?

I have spark and the fuel pump is pumping. It may backfire when turning over but will not run.

I'd check the flywheel key next.

Did you by any chance have the sheet metal shroud (flywheel cover) removed from the engine while you were running it?
If so, you may have overheated a cylinder head enough for an exhaust valve seat to pop out of place (and that could be your backfire).
