1965 sears suburban 10

My grandparents recently had an auction and I bought their 1965 sears suburban 10. I used to ride it 20+ years ago and couldn't let it go, especially for $20 that I paid. We had it running about 5 years ago, but now can't get it started. I put in a new battery but the coil seems weak. I say this because the plug (which is new) almost has to have the gap closed in order to get any spark, and then it is weak at best. Any info would be great, this has sentimental value and would mean a lot to get running again. Thanks.

Try cleaning the breaker points. Was this a Tecumseh?

I have heard that gently sanding the rust of the magneto and the magnets inside the flywheel can make a big difference on machines with magneto ignition. If that is the case you might try that while you have the flywheel off to check the points.

If it is NOT a magneto ignition ignore the above!

What type (the more info the better) of engine is it?

It has a magnet on the outside of the flywheel, and it passes by the coil as it spins. The points are also attached to the coil. I appreciate the advice and will try this stuff this weekend.
