Craftsman Rider Won't Start

Hello,

I have a Craftsman rider about 15 years old. Has been running great but the teeth on the gear ring were in rough shape. I replaced the gear ring on the bottom of the flywheel and the gear on the start and now the mower will not start. It cranks and I checked for spark but I do not know what else to check. There is no backfiring or sputter as if it were trying to start, it just cranks. I have little experience with engine repair so any help would be appreciated.

I would say that the flywheel key slipped out of place while you were installing the flywheel. You don't give the engine model number so I can't tell you what the torque requirements are for the flywheel nut either.

Yes, it appears that the key has sheared. I was not aware of the torque requirement. The engine is a Briggs and Stratton 15.5 HP model 28N707. I ordered a new key but I guess I am going to have to find a torque wrench.

65 ft. lbs. the taper of the crankshaft and flywheel are designed to hold the flywheel in proper position when the nut/bolt is torqued to proper setting. The key is ONLY for alignment until the nut or bolt is torqued.
