My guess would be that in the process of coming off the belt knock the PTO switch out of alignment.

With the engine off engage and disengage the clutch and look at the switch.

Thanks for the comments. I am not sure what you are referencing as the PTO switch on the Gravely is at my right hand beside the seat and the belt operating the mower is under the machine. On my old wheel horse, the belt was at right hand the side - is that what you were thinking??

Without the benefit of a wiring diagram to view, I opine that you may have a defective PTO switch. When the engine died as described in the first sentence above, the PTO switch MIGHT have grounded the ignition, killing the engine. The next sentence above describes a scenario in which the PTO circuit is already energized as soon as the key switch is turned to RUN. Plus the fact that the starter circuit seems to be open (which may also be due to the PTO switch) With a wiring diagram, we could walk through the circuits systematically to determine what was at fault, but at this point, I'm going to indict the PTO switch.
