My Troy Bilt Bronco 18.5 HP Briggs & Stratton will start on choke but stall immediately on fast or slow. Fuel is clean; filter is good; should I adjust screws on carburetor? Ideas? Thanks.

Check for loose carb & manifolds mounting bolts, remove carb float bowl and check for water/crude. Walt Conner

And, do not mess with carb screws-they are probably not the problem, unless--you have gotten the machine recently, from another home grown mechanic, who couldn't get it to run, either! Rustyj |

Is this a single or twin cyclinder?

I assume this is a 31" Briggs OHV. Have you dropped the bowl of the carb to look for debris/ water?

I have a Sears lawn tractor with a different B&S engine (31C707) but mine had the problem of the choke lever on the carb getting stuck after a few years. So check yours, see if it "opens" when you move the choke lever down to mid-way or less. I installed a 25 cent spring on mine to ensure this happens; an Internet search showed that a stuck choke on these is a common issue (with other fixes like whittling the shaft narrower, but I like my way).

Thanks for the advice. I will try your recommendations this weekend and follow up. Tractor only has about 40 hours.

Is it still under warranty? if so call sears. With that few hours unless it has set for long time I don't see it being a carb problem. I would look in the gas tank see if maybe You got some bad gas (full of water as suggested above) or you let it set out in the rain?
