John Deer STX38 Transmission

My 20yr+ STX38 suddenly ended up with two things wrong at the same time. (1)Upon stopping and having the shifter in neutral, the brake knob and pedal landed in the locked position - I never use this and don't know how it got there. I could not move it out of lock. Second issue: The shifter does not feel like it has normal resistance as it moves freely between positions. Moving the shifter does not engage the transmission - I am stuck in neutral with no way to engage the transmission and with a locked brake.

Any thoughts?

I can't come up witha correlation between the 2 issues. If there is, you'll have to dig under the body. I have seen the spring for the park brake feature go wayward and create a P brake issue. How the P brake is meant to work is once the brake pedal is held down- you can move the lever back into the unlocked position.
