14 H.P. B&S will not start

Might be posting premature as I might have been able to diagnose a few more items first, but anyways. My B&S was bogging and with slight backfiring when going from idle to full throttle. I shut it down and had a hard time starting it again. Finished up what I had started and now can't get it to start.

I checked spark and am getting that, but put in a different plug anyways. Tried starting with air cleaner off to rule out that being plugged. Checked valve clearance but have questions on that. The engine will attempt to run at idle just above starter rotation speed but dies.

Ok. haven't checked compression. Not sure if valve clearance is set at TDC on this engine, which is what I did so that could still be inaccurate. Have not dropped carb bowl to check for partial plugging of carb. The spark I did have was a little yellow in color. Could that indicate it's weak? Plug appeared dry.

Open for suggestions. Model 261777 Type 013001

Thanks in advance

For sure, you need to drop carb bowl, and if there is some crud in it, plan on taking carb off and cleaning it and blowing out all orifices. Put it back together. Be sure the fuel filter is replaced at this time also. If adjustment screw has been adjusted in your process of checking carb out, adjust it to a 1 1/2 turns out position, to start with and adjust as necessary after it is running again, to smooth it out. As a further measure for diagnosis, be sure that the gas and the gas tank doesn't have water in it. And be sure that you have clean and fresh gas. Yea, I know, you knew that. ;>)

usually the spark it bluish whitish look'en. Yellar usually means weak spark. Probably need to know what model engine for the valves beings it could be one of them compression release models that have a built in valve train adjustment problem.

My owners manual on mine says I am suspose to check the valve lash once a year if I remember correctly. mine was acting up on start, I checked it and it was off. Was a pain to get right, kept having to go back and readjust after I tighten the lock nut and after I fired it up, warmed it up and rechecked it. But, I finely got it right.

Ok, did a compression check and didn't look good so I pulled the head and gasket looks blown. Valves look good and cylinder wall as well.

Anyone give me the torque specs for the head bolts? Also does anyone know if the valves are set at TDC on the above model,
Thanks

Ok I'm scratching my head now. I put it back together feeling pretty good but I still have a difficult time starting it. When I give it throttle fast from an idle I still get a backfire. If I throttle up slow it runs smooth. When I engage the mower deck it sometime backfires and then smooths out.

What direction should I go next. What is healthy compression on these?
Thanks

would still suspect bad spark plug or weak coil with an engine mis-firing as you described.
