Husqvarna YTH 1542 Issue

I have this model and it is about 5 or 6 years old with the Kaw engine. Last night, I was picking up leaves and noticed a hot electrical smell. Shut her down and notices some wisps of smoke from the bottom near where the PTO engages. Let her sit and check oil, ok. It cooled down and I started again and it ran rough and weak. I took her to the garage and went through things more and notices that the air filter was clogged up and I cleaned and re-installed. It appeared to run ok, but I notice a high tone like somthing needs grease when the PTO is engaged. Any ideas?

You may have picked up something in the PTO or the PTO may be on its way out.

Get under the PTO and look around and above the PTO for sticks, grass, weeds, etc.

Make sure the drive belt is in good condition and not split or frayed.

Lurker,

I already did that but will check again tonight. I did have an immense build up of leave litter on top of the decks which I removed, but the PTO area looked clean. Is there any zerk on the PTO pully assembly? I did not see one.

Thanks

There is no zerk on the PTO... it works or it don't. When it don't it isn't cheap to replace.

On some PTOs you can adjust the air gap.

I have checked this out and it appears that is the bearings. Is the bearings included in the electric clutch or on the pully? It looks like they are in the electric clutch which will be $.

"Rule of thumb" on clutch bearing replacement versus complete clutch replacement is: If the bearing bore features retaining rings (aka "snap rings") to keep the bearing in place...........you can replace just the bearings. If there are no retainer rings present, and the bearing bore has been "staked" mechanically to hold the bearing...replace the clutch assembly complete.

If bearing is replaceable, you will probably need to obtain the bearing from a bearing specialty distributor store.
If the old bearing has "spun" on its arbor or in the bore, you would be advised to replace complete clutch as a new bearing will not correct that kind of damage.
