| So I was on my GT225, helping a buddy of mine clearing his property which hasn't been bush-hogged in two years. I know, not the intended use for this GT. I had no problem mowing 2" sweetgum saplings like fescue (pushing them over with the brush guard and chopping them up with my 42C beater deck) but an hour into it I got a little too close to a 5" white oak, which grabbed the right tire. I guess if I'd let go of the wheel and let off the gas it would have been fine, but for some reason I unwittingly held on and didn't get off the gas quick enough, heard a sharp clicking sound as I held the wheel firm but the tire turned in, and now it steers, but barely. The wheel feels really notchy when I turn it. It takes a lot of effort, but it does still steer in the full range. I didn't see any obvious damage to the spindles, drag link or tie-rod, but I'll need to remove the console to really get a good look at the steering gears.
Any ideas? |

| There ya go--hitting the nail on the head, as some say! It sounds like you broke some teeth on the steering gear which is evidently behind the fairing, out of sight. And, you have probably bent the steering from the steering column, to the front tie rod bar, and maybe the arms by the wheels! A careful inspection of all of the parts will show what is wrong. |

| Can't help with suggestions, but can say "been there" - in a sense. I rammed a tree with a Mighty Mite (sort of a miniature jeep we had in the late 50's) on Camp Pendleton. Hit it with the right front wheel. Totaled the darn thing out. First Sgt said I was gonna have to pay for it (700-odd dollars, as I recall). Lucked out of that. A year later, dropped a PRC-10 over the side of a submarine off San Clemente Island. First Sgt. said I'd have to pay for it (also $700+). Again, lucked out. Hope you'll be lucky, too. Semper Fi. |

| Definitely a steering gear IMO. Not a hard fix at all. Just take your time taking it apart so you can get it back together properly. As Rusty said carefully check all of the steering components after/during the steer gear change. Replace any that are bent. Good luck! |
