Kohler Pro 17HP Flooding Fuel

I have a 2001 Craftsman Tractor with a Kohler Pro 17 HP engine. When I try to start it, The flywheel will not turn because of excessive pressure. After only two turns of the key and then turning it off, gas starts pouring from the exhaust and eventually stops. Then I remove the spark plug and manually turn the flywheel and a great deal of gas shoots out the spark plug port. Once I put the plug back in, it starts up and runs reasonably well. Then a week later, it all happens again. Any suggestions?

Carburetor float is stuck open allowing fuel to flow from the bowl into the engine

Start by taking off the carb, carefully, then on a clean surface take off the needle and seat. Clean it well, replace the needle and seat.

If you check your oil level I bet you will find you are way over the high mark from the flooding.

I agree that the needle and seat are not in good order and likely need replacing, but don't stop there. This tractor needs to have an inline fuel shut off valve installed to prevent this from happening again. Get an inline shut off valve to fit the size fuel hose your tractor has, install the shut off valve between the fuel tank and the fuel filter. ALWAYS turn off the fuel valve when you park the tractor, even if it's just for a few minutes. And replace the gasoline contaminated lube oil in the crankcase, and the oil filter (if equipped) with fresh new oil (and filter) before using the tractor again after repairing the carb and installing the fuel shut off valve.

OSH, Lowes, Home Depot all sell a red inline shut off valve that can be had for a few dollars.

My Father's B&S Intech 19 hp is doing that also. Crankcase was completely full of oil/gasoline mix. Must of been a gallon of it. He burned up his solenoid trying to start it. When I jumped the starter from the positive on the battery it still wouldn't crank over. I just happened to check his oil level and found the "full" crankcase and the gasoline smell before I realized what happened. Funny thing was, he was told by the previous owner to be sure to shut off his inline fuel shut off. He said I never bothered doing it, but I guess I will now.

This is all too common an occurrance. For every case of an engine being drowned with its own gasoline, there are probably many more that are leaking to a lesser degree. Most of the "casual leakers" don't overfill the crankcase or cause hydrostatic lock in a cylinder, so they go un-noticed by the operator. If the leakage is just a "bit of a weep", the gasoline in the crankcase might boil out when the engine heats up without a lot of smoking (or maybe no smoke at all). Bottom line is: If your machine has a gravity fed fuel system, it NEEDS fuel shutoff valve (and it must be used diligently & faithfully).
