Craftsman 24hp Intek 917.275684 Tractor wont start

| The other day, my 917.275684 Craftsman tractor briefly caught fire...
I put it out quickly with a hose. It didn't look that bad but a few of the wires were melted...
I ordered a new wiring harness for 99.00 and installed it today. when you turn the key, the solenoid clicks but that is it. I have checked the safety switches.
If you don't press the clutch, engage the pto button or sit on the seat, there is no click at all.
I tried hooking the battery directly to the starter and nothing. I tried to use my cars battery by hooking up to the starter and grounded to the chassis but nothing...
Any ideas??? Please help me out... Thanks.

| Also, When I tried to hook the batteries (tractor and car) directly to the starter, I did get HUGE sparks from the negative terminal (last point of contact) ... |

| And just to clarify, there is a very soft single click followed by a more pronounced single click when the key is turned. |

First of all, I (for one) would like to know how the tractor ended up "catching fire". ***"And just to clarify, there is a very soft single click followed by a more pronounced single click when the key is turned."*** OK, you describe two clicks, do both clicks happen when the key is turned to RUN? or does the soft click occur at RUN and the second, louder click occur when you turn the key to START? If the soft click occurs in RUN.....That is probably the fuel shutoff solenoid on the carburetor being energized. If the louder click occurs at START key position.......that would be the starter solenoid. Follow this procedure: Can you turn the engine by hand? Remove the spark plugs and see if you can turn the engine by putting your hands on the screen on top of the engine, or you may need to remove the engine fan cover to turn the engine. If you can't turn the engine by hand, it is possible that the starter drive (bendix) is broken in mesh with the flywheel ring gear and has everything locked up. If the engine seems to be locked up, take off the engine top cover (if you haven't already) and inspect the starter drive assembly. First off, the starter drive gear SHOULD NOT be in mesh with the flywheel ring gear at this time. If it is, there is a problem with it. If you do see that the starter drive gear is meshed with the flywheel ring gear, take a punch or drift and tap it with a hammer to see if you can cause the starter drive gear to drop back down on the starter shaft. If the starter drive gear is not stuck in mesh with the flywheel ring gear and the engine still will not turn by hand with the spark plugs removed, you have serious engine damage (internal parts). OK, something else you can try. Disconnect the cable that leads from the starter solenoid to the starter, taking it loose AT THE SOLENOID. Try hooking the jumper cables back up so you can go straight to the starter (use the loose end of starter cable as your "last point of contact". If you still get a shower of sparks and the starter does not turn (and you have already determined the starter drive is not stuck in mesh), you have a defective starter that has shorted internally. If the starter does turn in the last step of tests, stop right there. While you still have the jumper cables hooked up to the donor battery, reach down and touch the positive jumper cable end to the post of the solenoid you took the starter cable off of. If you get a shower of sparks when contact is made to that post, the starter solenoid is shorted to ground internally. Post back what you find and we'll go from there. |

| I take that this didn't start as an electrical fire? If you remove the solenoid cable from the starter lug, does jumping direct to the starter still have the same results? Are you able to turn the engine screen by hand? |

| O.K. First off, What a great forum... Thank you for all of your help.... Especially to Mownie and Tomplum. The tractor is back up and running again... So, How did it catch fire...? I was mowing the lawn (which was covered with a few leaves... and... the next thing that I knew... I saw and smelt smoke... within 20 seconds I saw fire... So, I got off, ran to the garage for a fire extinguisher. When I returned, my neighbor (who just happened to be driving by) was putting the fire out with his fire extinguisher. What an awesome neighbor !!!!!!!!!!!! So, That got me here... After replacing the harness etc... I read through the forum learning about solenoids, switches, starters, pto clutches etc... In the end, When I took off the engine top cover, There was a few hundred feet of yarn wrapped around the starter gear and flywheel @#$%^&*&!???? I guess some varmint were living in there... but why did it take an engine fire to find out? My only guess is that when the engine was sprayed with the hose, some yarn got lodged in the stater/flywheel area... then the first time I tried to start the tractor, it tangled up around everything... seizing it all up. Once I removed it, the tractor started with its own battery.... You couldn't make this stuff up if you wanted to... In any case, Once again, Thank you... Glenn |

***"You couldn't make this stuff up if you wanted to..."*** WOW! Great story! Well, we have heard some tales of woe resulting from "them dagnabbit, consarned varmints" building nests under the sheet metal, but I can't remember one like this. Most of the nest building usually results in the ruination of an engine from overheating. I will stop short of calling you "Lucky", but it could have been a wiring harness AND the engine. |
