muffler bolt size

| My brother has a 4 year old Craftman tractor that is missing the cap screws that attach the muffler flange to the engine. It's a B&S 18.5 hp. Anyone know off the top of their head what size they are? I don't have the tractor here so I can't give the model.
Thanks,

Best thing to do is get the actual muffler bolts made for it, they are heat treated. Regular bolts wont hold up.

It was pretty late last nite when I posted that answer. While my answer is still correct (IMHO) I didn't answer your question. Probably they are 5/16 SAE thread, length depends on application. Might be like the 14.5 B&S with the 3/8 shaft w/ 5/16 thread that go through the muffler and are about 5 1/2 " long. or could be just as you said and go through the muffler pipe flange, and be about 1 1/4" long. Just depends on what the OEM part is from B&S, and they don't usually say what the length or diameter and thread is. So bottom line, it is just best to scrounge replacements from on old engine at your local lawnmower shop. They are usually willing to sell something used at a very reasonable price. And lastly if that isn't an option then have them order you the part new. Its not gonna cost all that much more than a hardware store bought bolt that won't hold up to the heat of the exhaust.

Commonly I think they are a 5/16" course thread by 1 or 1 1/4 long socket head capscrew w/ lock washers.

5/16" x 1" course thread heat treated with a lock washer worked perfectly. I purchased them at my local hardware store and drove down to his house to install them. Thanks for the info! It saved me from going down to his house, evaluating, and finding a retailer in his area, which I'm not familiar with.
