Hi everyone, its been a while. My problem is the K57 tuff torq trans. The pully on top came loose and thats all I can tell untill I take it out tonight I hope. Onl 146 hours on this Simplicity broadmore. Anyone want to chime in with anything I might need to know? I was thinkin while the K57 is out maybe I should change out the oil thats inside, any advise? Thanks!

Don't get too excited... you may not need to pull the trans. The pulley is made of softer material than the shaft it rides on. Many times careful wire brushing of the splines on the shaft and a new pulley and nut will get you fixed up. Check the fan and belt while you're there.

And don't don't forget a dab of Lock-Tite on that pulley nut and tighten it to the specified torque.

Well I pulled the trans out so I could get a good look at the pully. No loose nut,its held on with a C clip. The pully spun on the shaft. Pully will have to be replaced. The splines on the shaft will have to be cleaned up but should be OK. Why did this happen?
RE: K57 spun pully?

Well, if it's an older vintage Broadmoor it was just time and the softer pulley on a hardened shaft design functioned perfectly with the pulley failing rather than the shaft requiring a simpler and less costly repair. A dab of anti-seize on the splines couldn't hurt and a new C clip is in order. Make sure the sharp edge of the C clip is UP.

Just ordered the new pully and C clip, should be in Fri.The broadmore is an 05 with 146Hrs. on it. Is that vintage I don't know, but I'm not happy about it going this soon and I don't even beat on it.

'05 is not vintage... I was alluding to one of the good old days Broadmoors. An 05 with 146 hopurs should not have had this failure. I'd check and see if there are Simplicity service bulletins on this problem. Perhaps there was a bad production run of pulleys. Holding the pulley on with a C clip is not the optimum arrangement IMO. If I were you I'd call Tuff Torq and ask them. Nice people and they'll talk to you.
RE: K57 spun pully?
| | |
If the splines are straight, NOT tapered, and the C clip holds the pulley down snug then that's OK.
RE: K57 spun pully?

Check the parts breakdown and make sure there wasn't a "wavy washer" above or below the pulley that keeps everything tight. I know JD uses this to keep everything snug, and I've seen this happen there if that was missing. If not tight the pulley can walk up and down the shaft and wear out the splines.

looked at the washer today and found it worn where the c clip rides against it. Must have alowed it to move just enough. How do I keep that from happenig again?
RE: K57 spun pully?

| Anti-seize on the washer will help. Make sure that the E clip is oriented correctly... there is a sharp edge and a rounded edge. The sharp edge goes away from the washer. If the washer is flat you might research a hardened washer to replace it. I would still call Tuff Torq and see what they say... they know more about those transaxles than anyone here... | I talked with tuff torq today. They sqaid the pully is not therepart and that some use a nut instead of a clip about 50/50. Also said I could switch the 10w30 oil in the unit to 5w50 sinthetic 2 qts. After you drain and fill do you need to do anything else? |
RE: K57 spun pully?

If Tuff Torq said there is no acknowledged problem with the K57 then you's failing is just the (un)luck of the draw. 5W50 Mobil 1 is a good move since the trans is out. You will need to follow the purging procedure when the trans is back in the tractor. I would find a hardened (grade 8) washer that is exactly the dimensions of a new replacement washer from Simplicity and put some anti-seize on the side that faces the clip and not worry about it anymore.

Did a search for purge instructons and nothing came up.

Thanks for the imfo lurker. Its going to be hard to top off the system once the unit is installed.

I had the same problem with that type of transmission. The pulley splines are softer than the shaft, to keep the shaft from wearing out, instead of the pulley. My parts supplier showed me, on the computer, that Tuff-torque no longer serviced the parts for that tranny. Then a writer here said they got parts from a JD Dealer, so off i went. The parts man at the JD Dealer didn't have that pulley, new, but found a good one on an old tranny out back in his junk parts bin. I took it and the plastic fan home, stuffed it all together, and it now is good as new! |
RE: K57 spun pully?

The parts guy at the dealer ordered me the pully. I hope it comes in.The tuff torq site shows they still make the K57.
RE: K57 spun pully?
| | |
the parts kit has two washers that go on top of the pully. I only had one when I took it apart so I'm thinkin this allowed the pully to move up and down and thats what did in the pully.

All back together and everything is fine. Did the back yard full of leaves and everything held together. No problem with the fluid change and everythig worked as it had before.
