John Deere 425 winter question

I was hoping to be able to split wood with my John Deere 425 using the hydraulics or PTO. I was wondering if anybody has tried this or is this even possible, and if yes what have been the results?

The hydraulic flow on the 425 is pretty small and at low pressure, which would yield slow action. You could get a pto driven pump to run the hydraulics, but most people just go to a separate two behind unit. :)

I sold my JD 425, so I apologize that I can't verify the details, but just in case jim67 isn't aware of this, there's a small butterfly valve located below the foot rest (the brake pedal side, I think). This butterfly valve should be adjusted whenever you remove or attach the mower deck. When this valve is in the correct position, the hydraulic flow for your JD425 attachments (I had a snow blower) will be much snappier. I forget if you close or open it in the spring or the fall. I just learned that whenever I was installing or removing the snow blower, you must drop to the ground and rotate this valve fully to its opposite position. Moreover, I don't believe this crucial step is mentioned in the official John Deere documentation.

You will not be able to run a splitter because of the relief valve setting on the pump. You would have to get a seperate pump and attach it to the rear pto providing that there is one mounted on your tractor.
