Positive Gasket Maker experience

Just a short note that might help someone else.

My Cub Cadet 3185 developed a leak where the differential mates to the axle plate. I bought new CC gaskets and the factory service manual that specs Loctite 5999. It was not available locally, so NAPA suggested Permatex Ultra Blue gasket maker. It didn't work, still leaked in the same spot. Followed all directions.

So... after more research and talking with the NAPA people, I used Permatex Ultra Copper, with no gasket at all. Waited probably 45 minutes in the 40 degree garage for it to skin over, and torqued the fasteners to 30 in lbs, finished them to 90 in the morning in several steps. No problems at all. A fantastic product.

One side note, I couldn't easily separate the rear pan from the axle plate, so I left it in-place with factory gasket and the Ultra Blue and it is working fine.

How thick did you apply the Permatex Ultra Copper. Did it still squeeze out when tightened? I'm always somewhat hesitant to leave gaskets off due to potential clearance problems but in your application I guess that was not an issue.

I applied the Ultra Copper at least 1/8" thick on the entire surface. Letting is skim over and torquing it over time helped a lot. Very little squeezed out around the edges. You're correct, no clearance issues since it was more or less a rear end cover(s).

Permatex and Loctite Products are both excellent. Actually 90% of the Automobiles in the US and Europe now utilize a form of instant gasket on all applications . Properly applied Liquid Gaskets will out perform cork or Neoprene 1970-1980 vintage gaskets for sealability . Even when I utilize a Mr Gasket Product for clearance issues I still use loctite as added protection lol .

I use Loctite's Right Stuff for about everything. A little pricey but when you figure all the time it takes to get these tractors apart and back together I don't want to have to do it twice. This product has been changed so you no longer have to wait for it to skin over. Just assemble and use.
