Duropower generators

Anyone have any experience with these? I know and realize they are an offshore product (most are), but I am looking to get some feedback from any owners. I have a chance to get a DP7000E extremely inexpensively since it is involved in a trade deal.

RE: Duropower generators

georgkim,
I think you just asked the Bruce Springsteen Choir (MADE IN THE U.S.A.)if they could sing something from Madame Butterfly, hahaha.

I think you asked a reasonable question and I hope a few Durapower owners will respond. I know several people who own
Grizzly table saws and they swear by them, not at them and they come from China. Personally, I have a Grundig shortwave radio that was made in China, and it's fantastic. That's why
think you asked a good question.

RE: Duropower generators

Ervie,

Thanks for your note!

Your right on the money and I actually own a Grizzly 10" table saw.....and love it! I bought it instead of a Delta since it was heavier and seemed better built.

I have little if anything into this. My only complaint is that I had to mount the wheels and put oil in the engine. I am just trying to get HONEST opinion based on experience.

RE: Duropower generators

I had an older Grundig radio and it was made in Germany.

RE: Duropower generators

I don't own one but have seen many at my shop. Most of the time they have quit putting out current if the engine lasts a while. Most common problem with the China made engines is a VERY cheap flimsy recoil unit that just can't last. Next would be valve tappet troubles, some serious, some not.

Personal opinion......The China made products cost 2/3 the money of say Generac. You can expect some good service from a Generac and the engine has a 2 year warranty in consumer hands.

Agreed. Loss of power output seems to be the most common complaint. The rewinds are junk on most of them.

OK, that gives me an answer and thanks for the input. I guess considering I have ~ $100.00 into this, I'm OK.

RE: Duropower generators

Avoid Duro Power Like the plague!!! I bought one of there 1,200 inverter generators only to have the first one arrive d.o.a. on my door step. I contacted Duro Power and they said I would have to have to ship it back ($80.00) and that made me feel ripped off already. Two weeks later I got a replacement unit, now when I went to unscrew the oil dip stick I noticed it had dirty oil in it meaning this unit had been previously used. I further examined the unit and was able to see the fuel filter with a 500 watt halogen light and the fuel filter was semi dirty. I know what they are doing over there. If you send a defective unit back then they take spare parts laying around there shop and put another one together for you. Well this unit only lasted me three uses (less than five hours). On the third use when I went to start it the recoil rope pulled out and stayed out as I heard the recoil spring break and spin around inside.

I contacted Duro Power asking if I could pay another $80.00 to ship the second one back to them. The response I got was we will send out parts free of charge but it's up to you to find a small engine mechanic. So why does the box it came in say "1 year warranty?" Well I took the piece of junk to many small engine mechanics only to basically get laughed at, most of the mechanics said they just don't want to take the responsibility for opening up the unit. I even wen to a Honda dealer and they basically laughed at me.

Long story short I went out and spent the buck on a Honda E.U.2000.I and have put 200 hard hours on it so far and it purrs like a kitten, it's also very very quiet. I have read Honda forums and people have stated that they have allot of hours on their Honda E.U.2000.I's. One person was a die hard camper and he stated his had well over 9,000 hours on it with not one problem, five years and running great. Another person owns some kind of radio station and sends out her people or employee's to vend and advertise on the streets, she stated her four Honda E.U.2000.I's get abused every day and have over 10,000 on her generators.

Not all asian generators are bad! Yamaha is another good pick but pricey like the Honda's. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! Unfortunately I had to learn the hard way.

Honda gives you a no question asked two year residential warranty on their generators and one year for commercial use. Not sure on Yamaha. And there are Honda dealers all over the country if you do end up needing repairs and same for Yamaha generators.

I have even bought a few cheap "Magna" inverters brand new off of E-Bay only to realize they are made by the same cheap asian generator dealer that Duro Power buys from, same tear drop look and all and yes those inverter generators did not last long either.

Asian generators are not all bad. Just make sure you buy a Honda or a Yamaha generator. Honda was the one who invented the inverter for generators.

Good Luck. I hope this helps to save someone money and agony like I went through learning the HARD way.

RE: Duropower generators

Hi Georgekim:

I know this is a somewhat old thread, but maybe this will help:

I have a Duropower 6000 ELP, a 12 hp aircooled propane run, portable generator.

It's got about 100 hours on it and runs nicely. In East Texas we get lots of outages, so I placed this unit into a corner of our 8' by 8' yard shed, plumbed in a propane line with manual shutoff (runs to 300 gal tank). Of course, affixed a piece of curved EMT to the muffler to duct out exhaust, and installed a thermo controlled attic vent fan to duct out engine heat.

It works beautiful, both the generator & this 'custom' indoor run enclosure.

Why was I willing to 'take a chance' on Chinese quality ? Well, about 75 % of what we buy with Japanese or American labels is already made there. What I understand, is that these Duropower engines are the earlier series of OHV engines made in the (former) Honda plant that made them some years earlier, or are made using the original blueprints & tooling.

I picked mine up at the LA headqarters / warehouse, and I spoke with the manager. Nice facility and they looked serious about both servicing customers & their products. An unbelievably wide line of products.

To make sure I didn't get a lemon, before I left LA to come home to Texas, I 'ran the tar' out of this unit at my friends house, ran his swimming pool, worklights & space heater (just to load it to 50 %or so), emptying several LP bottles.

Ran like a champ, bulletproof. Changed the oil, went to synthetic 15/50 mobil 1.

That was 14 months ago (7/07). Now, 100 more run hours - this time powering 1/2 my house thru a transfer switch, got us thru Hurrican IKE.

I'll let you judge whether assuming Duropower chinese generators are junk, is a fair assesment.

On all product purchases, we take a chance.

30-40 years ago, the same suspicions were said about Taiwan or Japanese products, and those who 'took a chance' on them were, on the main, rewarded with quality goods at a 'below market' price,

It only took another 15-20 years before the public at large figured this out !

My .02 hope it helps.

RE: Duropower generators

David from Nacogdoches,

THANKS for the very thorough, objective review of your DuroPower generator. I've been looking for a generator and found DuroPower on the web - been looking over their stuff. they do see very affordable.

SO NICE to see a REAL review instead of the usual jingoist bashing of "Foreign made" products - especially when even "American" brands are mostly made overseas these days. The fact is that many Asian plants have QC and employee training that produces a BETTER product than we get here. Sad but true. There's something to be said for the work Demming did "over there" after WW2.

I've had good and bad experiences with foreign-made products - the same experience as I've had with US-made stuff. I think that the problems people have often have as much to do with their usage of the product as the product itself.

RE: Duropower generators

I have a Duropower DP7500ED that I purchased about 3 years ago. Up until this last week I had only tested the generator twice. With Irene, power was out for 6 days and I put about 85 hours on the unit running it 16 hours a day hooked into a transfer switch on the main panel. The unit ran well and had no major issues.

Some minor issues:
-minor leaking of diesel fuel from the plate where it enters the engine. I will seal this with black RTV and expect to be done with it.
-there is a 20amp push button breaker on the front panel that flips quite often when trying to use the 30 amp electric water heater. (I'm not sure why they installed a 20amp breaker and rate the recepticle at 30 amps). When this breaker flips I loose half of the 220 circuit. 220 motors don't run properly and half of the 120 circuits are out. I'm not sure if this is the way this is suppose to work, but I intend to replace with a 30 amp breaker which should minimize the issue.

Here is a link that might be useful: DP7500ED
