Poor Unfortunate Oak

I finally took some pictures of my poor unfortunate oak. Two arborists don't hold out much hope for it, but thought it was worth at least waiting until spring (after they pruned out the dead wood) to see how much more die back there is.

It's history: Apparently this was a wooded lot before our house was built about 3 years ago. The house is in the tree's dripline, and the soil was compacted and graded over its roots. (we bought the house after it was already built)

I'm posting these pictures for my own education - why is the bark two different textures like this? Is that weird round thing on it some sort of wound? Is the soil too high around the base? Why are the (remaining) branches all twisty like that? (or is that typical for oaks?) Thanks!
