cherry tree grows straight up

We have a cherry tree that is probably about 16 feet tall now, but the branches all grow out a little and then straight up. As a consequence of this, the tree branch tips are at most 3-4 feet apart at the widest point. This tree just isn't branching out! Pun intended.

Is there some way I need to prune the tree so that it grows laterally more as it grows vertically?
