| I have two large oak trees, about 35 years old each. They just went through the "catkin" stage, dropping lots and lots of catkins on the sidewalk. I just noticed today that they are full of what looks like balls of mottled leaves. Is this some sort of disease? These balls of leaves seem to be covered with the catkins. I don't see any bugs or worms crawling in them. |

| Thanks to Oklahoma State University, I have found that this problem is an oak gall midge. It's rare and no species name has been assigned to this creature! Apparently, nothing to worry about, although they look terrible. |
