Magnolia looking sick

Our otherwise magnificent magnolia tree is looking sick this year. Many of its leaves are discolored and wilting. Am including the link to several photos. We are desperate for a diagnosis and suggestions as to appropriate treatment, if any exists.

Magnolias has pretty fragile roots. Have you been digging or done anything else around the tree?

no, nothing like that at all. But we're in Bethesda, MD and the season has been unusually cool and (lately) wet.

we have added a couple more pictures to the link, of leaves picked from the tree (still green) and others found on the ground (yellow and brown). We've read other posts suggesting that this condition may be normal for magniolias but ours has never looked this bad. Pls reassure us and/or help!
