Young apple tree with weird hole in bark?

This is an apple tree I planted 8 weeks ago. I think it may have had this hole early on, but I thought maybe it was just a scrape to the bark and would go away. Now I'm not so sure. It's about an inch or less. There's also another, smaller hole a bit further down. Any ideas what it could be? Thanks.
