one other alternative.. with a 20 foot giant.. would be to figure out how to rejuvenate it back into a 6 foot shrub .... and reduce the volume of the problem ....

I'd plant a groundcover vigorous enough to 'eat' the husks. Think of them as a top dressing.

Thank you Mike. Can you explain what you mean by eating the husks? What kind of plants would do that? Right now the area under the tree is planned for my garden.

Is there any kind of netting system available or practical, that stretches under the tree canopy to catch the husks? Should I check with my local Home Depot for such a solution?

By eating the husks I mean that the groundcover is coarse enough to have the husks fall down under the groundcover, in effect, eating it. I use hardy Geranium in my garden to do that chore. The mulching mower does the rest. Plus, I don't grow anything with large leaves or real long needles. I'm a low maintenance man.
I suppose you could use some bird netting to catch the husks if you want to.
