The inland heatwave finally visited the east coast today in a big way: the maximum temperature in Sydney today smashed the old record of 45.3c (from 1939)by 0.5c

how are your trees?

 o
RE: new temperature record in Sydney: 45.8c/114f

The trees can take it, but the treeferns aren't enjoying it. A lot of Cyathea cooperi are planted here and many are dead or look half-dead. They are a species relatively happy in full sun, but they don't like extended dry periods.

Ouch! More than 50% hotter than my all-time record high (30 deg.)

30? That's just a bit higher than our average July high (84F, 28.8C). We set a new record for all-time high last July - 105F, 41.1C.

We beat your all time high here in SE WI at least 60x in 2012.

Looking back at July I can't believe how painful it was (for SE WI). For 23 days it was 90 degrees or higher. 1 degree from equaling the all time high of 106.

 o
Resin, I'm guessing you live on the west coast

Well, you know what they say on subtropical forums like Growing on the Edge: "west is best"

 o
RE: new temperature record in Sydney: 45.8c/114f

Its all about your perspective. Whaas I would have LOVED to have only 23 days of 90+. That sounds pretty freaking good to me. Not sure, but probable had close to that in 100+ days. In summer 2011. I'm certain we had well more than that in 100+.

Summer of 2011 saw us hit an all-time record of 90+ days of 100 F or higher in central Tx. Probably had about 5-8% tree death as the heat wave was accompanied by the 2nd driest 11 months ever. Hope to never see that again. Hope your spell breaks soon.

Ark, how about a high of 0 with 25 mph, -25 wind chill with no snow cover! It was -8 as of 8am this morning.
I guess thats winter but usually you won't have 20" of snow melt in early January! Thats the only thing that makes me aggravated.

Edit: The 23 days was in July alone. Keep in mind where I am located! A good 700 miles further away from the equator and 25 miles from the great lake. I know its peanuts but compared to normal its off the charts.

at 7 am this morning it was 0.2 degrees F ... thats a whooping -17.6667 C

which leads to the question.. ==>> which would you prefer???

we were doing a small happy dance.. as there is no wind ... [of course.. the dance was indoors.. lol.. right before i sent them off to school]

whaas (really to everyone hotter, colder, drier),
Sorry, wasn't trying to come off as "that guy", the topper. John has certainly had it worse temp wise than I, and Texas has had much more prolonged drought than I, not to mention more 100 degree days. FWIW, you have entirely too much winter for me. We do get large snowfalls from time to time, but they very rarely anywhere near persistent as what you see. I'm very aware of of these things. I've said for a long long time "My climate zone is from a about norther Arkansas to maybe far southern Iowa, beyond that, and it's just too much of something!". Again, my apology.

Even now I'm growing tired of our version of cold (13 this morning BTW). We had a very pleasant weekend, and I got the spring itch already. We have had next to no snow (about an inch is all), plus not much in the way of rain, and the warm days beginning to pop up here and there, just makes the spring itch worse. Even so, I hate to think what I believe summer may bring. I'm not liking the setup AT ALL. WAY WAY WAY too dry from here westward (including SW and NW), and La Nina seems to want to develop again, the Pacific PDO is negative phase, and allot of the Atlantic is warmer than average. That is NOT typically a good combination for my region of the world. I'm very nervous about the upcoming growing season.

Ken, that is warm! I can't keep the ice from forming on my windows. That wind was a son of a you know what the other day. Furnace has yet to turn off the last 36 hours. Today is the last day of the worse of it.

Ark, you didn't come off that way. I just like complaining about the weather on here because no one else gets it. The weather doesn't actually bother me personally. I just love my plants too much. I backed off a little now that I have a little one.

whaas,
I completely understand that. Hence my whining about the drought that seems to go on and on like the bunnie's battery. I'm sure you will all hear me whining again beofre it over.

For those that have and interest in weather, you might like to read the link below. Talks about some of the recent changes in climate, and how there may be a new tool coming for predicting the winter.

And while Sydney is hot, northeast Australia is wet right now, I hear. Quite extreme weather on that continent.

 o
RE: new temperature record in Sydney: 45.8c/114f

It's certainly feeling more humid now. Hopefully, some of that Queensland rain will come down and fall on my garden.

 o
RE: new temperature record in Sydney: 45.8c/114f

Hmmm, I would join the complaining, but I really don't have that much to complain about this winter. Yes it was 0F this morning, and we are in the midst of an Arctic blast, but otherwise the winter has been moderate and not much snow.

A bit dry, but it's not a drought, and it rarely gets over 100F here. Cannot imagine days or weeks of such hot weather combined with exceptional drought. Brutal!

I believe the scientists who say that global climate change is upon us. They measured 400 ppm CO2 at the Arctic last April, and James Hansen says that 350 ppm CO2 was the tipping point. Although in New England, I will like it, if the biggest change is milder winters.

What do you say to people who say that the government is controlling the weather? She tells me to go to HAARP and look it up.

Or to quote someone on it...

What have you been smoking? Also where did you get your education, from a cereal box? Go buy some tin foil and hide in a cave, leave the sane people out of your conspiracy theories.

"What do you say to people who say that the government is controlling the weather? She tells me to go to HAARP and look it up."

Tell her that she probably shouldn't mention anything like that, while above ground, because it might attract extra scrutiny from Echelon intercept teams. Tell her that, if she's going to talk about that kind of thing, you are worried about being around her because the government might target you also, for associating with her.

 o
RE: new temperature record in Sydney: 45.8c/114f

LOL!

Well I think there might be some weather on the near horizon that I can complain about. They are predicting blizzard conditions for Friday into Saturday, with a potential for up to 20 inches of snow. I guess Ma nature has been saving it all up for February!
