Marcescence in Metasequoia?

This winter (this morning, in fact), I've noticed that several of the large Metasequoia on my drive to work have retained about 10% of their dead leaves, mostly on the outer/upper branches.

I can't remember them doing this in previous seasons. Would there be a reason for this?

I've seen it in oaks, beeches, hornbeams, even sometimes Sugar Maples to a limited degree, but not Metasequoia.

it often depends on how fast they get hit with winter ...

if they hadnt shed all the way.. prior to such.. some can hold on ...

an interesting question for the conifer peeps ...

Well, I do remember that we had a 17F freeze in mid-November. They were in full color (no longer green) but were still more or less fully leaved.

I noticed this with the big ones down at MOBOT about 20 miles from me which retain more foliage than mine. They might be more sheltered and should have some more urban heat island effect but it is a pretty similar environment to my home.

So I was just blaming a lack of good wind.
