Brazil Pepper Tree Pruning?

Posted by Cwgrljw none (My Page) on

I live in California, I have a Brazil pepper tree in the backyard. We have avoided trimming this tree several time due to the Sap.

When is the best time and way to trim this tree to avoid the sap explosion?

Well, since it's an invasive species, you could prune it at ground level and plant something better for the environment, but if you are definitely going to keep it...

Now is a great time to prune your tree. If you are not sure about proper pruning techniques (prune just outside the branch bark ridge / branch collar, don't make heading cuts, etc), there are a number of guides online. Here are some examples:

US Forest Service on How to Prune Trees

ISA on Pruning Young Trees

ISA on Pruning Mature Trees

ISA on Why NOT to Top a Tree

No capsaicin, but being in the family Anacardiaceae, it may contain urushiol and similar toxins (like poison-ivy). So caution is advisable.
