New Year's ID

This is a new one for me. I took this pic today in Chester County PA. This is really more of a shrub about 15' high, maybe 12' wide. Countless seedheads, I opened them up and but no sound seed. No volunteer seedlings anywhere.
No leaf damage whatsoever. What's it called, what are it's faults?
