Very sad hemlocks--any hope?

Our neighbors call these the "Dr. Suess trees." We just bought this house about 6 months ago, so we're not sure what the prior folks were thinking. The trees seem way too close together, and apparently there used to be even more of them. They also don't appear to be thriving in general; perhaps they're the wrong species of hemlock for the region/site. We REALLY want some sort of a screen between our yard and the driveway on the other side of this, but I'm thinking these guys will never look good nor provide any privacy, so we should just start over.

Do you agree? Or could some effort save one or two? Thanks in advance!!!

TIIIIIMMMBERRRRRRRRR

That is how I feel about them. Many, many things better suited for screening those are. That said some of the problem could possibly be if they are in a very shaded location which is hard to tell from the pics.

They don't even look like they are serving any purpose there, at least now. They look out of place and somewhat eyesore-ish.

Whenever I see sad looking hemlocks like that, my first thought is the Hemlock Adelgid. These little pests are alive and well in NYS; I watched them destroy some hemlocks on my brother's properties in Cortland County and Orange County.

I am not saying that these insects are the problem, but would be an easy investigation.

They're too close to the road, too close to the driveway and too close to each other...other than that they're situated fine ;-). Depending where in upstate NY you are, the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid may also be an issue.

I have seen some in shade and they looked fine, they like some shade according to Musser forests latest catalog. If it was me I would leave one and chop the rest. Add some shrubs near it. Just what I would do.

They are not exactly the nicest trees, but I've seen uglier. I would probably not bother doing anything to them. They kind of stop your eye from going immediately to the street and I think the yard would look smaller without them.

I would also add some shrubs near them to seperate you from the driveway..... also prune out that big snag from your sidewalk tree (silver maple?) and consider getting rid of the ivy? groundcover that covers the yard.... it looks like it has paths worn into it. In other words there's not much you can do for the hemlocks, I would focus my energies elsewhere.
