Its just a forecast as of now but between the Tues high and the Wednes low its going to be a 55 degree swing.

53 degrees to -2.

Can't say I've ever seen that big of a swing in 24 hours. Anyone else seeing a crazy swing like that?

I'd hate to be a tree on Wednes.

Well I have seen it go from mid 60's to heavy snow in a matter of 3-4 hours on several occasions. Also had 90 degree temp drop over a few days, followed by a 100 degree temp rise over a few days a couple years ago. Don't think have done 50's to sub-zero in 24 hrs though.

Well I wasn't around then, but the Armistice Day Blizzard of 1940 dropped temps from the mid 50s to the mid teens in 12 hours and to below zero in 24 hrs along with 80 mph winds and 27 inches of snow in some areas. Duck hunters who went out in short sleeve shirts and got stranded by winds froze to death. Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa were hardest hit.

We have 50 degree swings but it is from one county to the next - it can be 50 degrees on the Golden Gate Bridge and 100 degrees in Contra Costa County about a half hour away, at the same time. Makes giving gardening advice around here rather dicey!

with the prevaling jet currents from the NW ...

we usually get what you get.. 12 or 24 hours later ...

though i know not the numbers.. it was pretty close ...

rained like the devil last night.. woke me 3 times pounding on the roof above me [luckily no trees overhanging.. lol .. so i could fall back asleep] ...

as is usual with rain waking one.. i have no clue the time in between awakenings..

and it being January.. the rain gauge isnt out there ... so who knows what really happened ...

when the sun rises.. i will be able to see if i have standing water ...

That storm kept me up as well with all the thunder and wind, didn't help that the little one didn't want to sleep in her own room. Can't say t-storms roll in that often in January.

The soil is completely frozen so one area in particular, although not widespread, has a good 6" of standing water. Only a dawn redwood's drip line of roots is completely submerged. I hope the soil thaws some so I don't have a pond over there.

The temp. swing isn't going to be as abrupt as originally forecasted. Maybe 50 degrees over a day and half.

Let me know if anyone has figured out a way to fast forward to March. This winter is a big tease with fridig temps to spring like temps. Big snow falls, then melt offs. Just keep cold and let that snow be until March!

We are to get only a glancing blow again from the colder air coming south (73 today, and 25 within 36 hours, with an immediate warmup to a little above average after that), but we have gotten the full on of the warm air surging north. Overnight lows have been 10-15 degrees ABOVE average HIGHS. Currently a Tornado watch, 60 degree dewpoint (also extremely high for this time of year), 66 degrees, and much much much needed rain in the forecast.

Happens here in winter

We can have a low of 30F and high of 80F quite commonly.

Continental airmasses behind fronts do that as a rule. There's a piece in the NYT today about how common it is in KC MO.

seen day to day high temps vary as much as 60 degrees. that is to say, high temp one day was 40 degrees and high temp the next day was 20 degrees below zero. and that is why I no longer live in north Dakota.

RE: Only in WI?

Back in December of 2005 when we had 90s only to see 14*F a couple days later that caused a lot of damages to the plants.
