The main difference I can see here is the hardiness, they are not quite as cold hardy as f. sylvatica. They can probably handle hot summers better though. Other than that, they seem very similar. Grows in the same kind of environment at about the same pace. I can hardly tell them apart when I come upon one in some park.
How about Fagus crenata? Would that do OK in my location?
It would if you could find one. Not in UMN Plantfinder and I'm almost certain I've never seen anyone offer them, not even Forestfarm or the late lamented Arborvillage.
