Hi tree lovers, I have a 5 year old avocado tree that is healthy but has growns lately quite irregular. One side is quite a bit higher and stronger than the other main side branch and I was wonding if I have to prun it? If so when would the time be to do so? I am in South Africa. Would appreciate any kind of feedback Thanks in advance

welcome to GW .... its very hard to give pruning advice w/out a picture ... trees grow in all kinds of weird shapes and forms ... and there are a multitude of reasons to prune for such ... but my baseline is: if it isnt broke.. dont fix it ... can you live with it in the form it is in??? ken

In no way shape or form am I even an amateur on pruning avocado trees. But, where are you in South Africa? We had an avo growing in Bryanston that never got very tall and never fruited. The consensus was that we were below the ridge line in Bryanston and it got too cold for the avo tree to do much. Sugerbush (suikerbossies) won't grow below that same ridge line either, so it's obviously enough to affect some sensitive plants. Maybe it's a microclimate that's affecting one side of the avo tree? Unless you're growing avocados on a farm for production, they can grow to be huge trees in the right situation. The lowveld and Natal coast have some giants in gardens.
