Prunus mume & Chimonanthus fragrans should have started blooming in the South. They bloom a lot earlier than cherries, peaches, etc. These are spring flowering trees with sweet and wafting scent. I love them.

Brandon, are yours blooming now?

Nice photographic collection of Prunus mume blooms! Mine have not started blooming yet. Probably won't be too long now.

Oh, it is good to learn that you have these too. See, we have some common ground :-) Have the buds of yours been showing color yet?

I actually haven't looked at them in quite a while. I live across town from my arboretum/farm and it's been exceptionally wet and cold around here lately. Yesterday was the first time I've even been able to do much outside in probably two weeks. That's one reason I've been on here as much as I have.

This picture is taken in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China today.

For the cold regions, these can be forced in greenhouse and bloom indoors:

This is called "dancing in the wind", Brandon, if you have time in winter, you could try these. These are not aimed at large market but each piece sell at a very high price.

The show plays a few pieces of music. One of them is an ancient piece dated to 317 AD designed for Prunus mume. You can hear it here. As a pointer, in the piece, either the blooms or the fragrance first appeared at 0:45.

Correctly C. praecox. It comes in more yellow and less yellow versions.

Here is a link that might be useful: Chimonanthus

forget about gulls, why are plastic trees used outside in China. With so many beautiful Asian trees such as Prunus mume send a pic of the real thing. What kind of trees are favored around temples, cemeteries, how about the Forbidden City? What does it mean when I see thousands of strips of white paper tied to branches of some trees around shrines? I am asking the OP to surprise us and provide an interesting post.

Sam, this is Beijing Zhongshan Park today, right outside the Forbidden City, USDA zone 6-7. They have small flower shows all year round. If you have other request, please feel free to ask me.

Tennessee has been colder than average this March as has Maryland, where I am. The entire eastern US outside Florida has been colder than normal.

Jujujojo, I went over to the farm today and looked at mine. There are a few buds, but not many. I'm not sure what will happen later on, but it looks like this may be an off year. I did quite a bit of pruning last year and don't know if this had anything to do with it or not.

I probably am asking too late. Brandon, are yours finished blooming now?
